If Sophos Anti-Virus is installed on your University of Idaho
computer, it is likely the Sophos Firewall Client was also
installed. The Sophos Firewall Client protects your
computer from malicious applications and processes which may try
to access the network. Sometimes, the firewall client
might block something that is harmless, or otherwise legitimate. Here are a few things to look at if the Sophos
Firewall Client is installed, and you suspect it might be
blocking your action:
- The Sophos Firewall, when installed correctly, shows up
in your system tray as a small, blue colored brick wall:

-
If you right-click the firewall icon, you
will get a small menu with a few options. Most notable
are "View Log", "Configure", and "Clear Alert". It is
worth noting that the firewall client is managed by ITS and
while you can make temporary changes to your firewall settings,
these settings will be overwritten the next time your
firewall software updates. You will mainly be
interested in "View Log" and "Clear Alert".

-
If you ever have issues with an application
or a process, check to make sure the firewall icon in your
system tray is still blue in color. If it is no longer
blue, and has turned a dark red color, right-click the icon
and select "View Log" from the menu. Here, you can see
what Sophos is blocking:

Note: You can also hover your mouse over
the firewall icon to get a quick message of what was blocked:

-
To have an application or process added to
the global firewall rules, notify the ITS Help Desk so that
a ticket can be opened for the Security team. The
ITS
Help Desk can be reached by phone at 208-885-HELP (4357).
The ITS Help Desk is located in 128 of the Teaching &
Learning Center.
Note: Once you have reported the
issue, you can right-click the firewall icon and select
"Clear Alert" to clear the error and return your firewall icon
back to it's normal operating color.
-
Alternately, if this is a temporary need to
bypass the firewall (remote vendor support, for example),
right-click on the firewall icon and select "Configure," and
then "Allow All Traffic."

Note: Do not make additional
changes here as they will only be temporary. When finished with
temporarily allowing all traffic, return to the configuration to
uncheck this box and re-enable the firewall.
